ZAMBIA - Increased financing for African agriculture and implementation of well researched extension services is important in developing the sector that can ensure food security and uplift majority poor out of poverty, a senior international agricultural expert has said.
Speaking ahead of the 12th Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme Partnership Platform (CAADP-PP) that will be held in April this year, head of CAADP at Nepad planning and coordination agency Augustin Wambo Yamdjeu said.
In a statement, Dr Yamdjeu said there is need to take stock of the various efforts towards endorsing the features of appropriate vehicles for sustainable financing to achieve set goals and targets for the next decade.
“The 12th CAADP PP meeting will reflect on African socio-economic development strategies to stimulate agriculture-led growth and country commitment to put agriculture at the top of national economic development agendas,” he said.
Dr Yamdjeu said the meeting to be organised under the theme, ‘Financing African agriculture and implementation support for accelerated agriculture growth and transformation,” will also focus facilitating the exchange and learning to advance and attract increased investments and financing for the agriculture industry.
It is expected that the 12th CAADP PP will be opened by the African Union commissioner for rural economy and agriculture Rhoda Tumusiime and the NEPAD agency’s chief executive officer Ibrahim Mayaki.
Also in attendance will be high-level African leadership, regional economic communities, senior policy makers from government ministries, farmers’ organisations, the private sector, civil society, research community and development partners.
